Current debates in the media about the lack of women in leadership positions within sport often assume that women have been entirely absent from coaching or administrative positions. It is certainly true that women have been, and continue to be, marginalized in this respect but several remarkable individuals over the years have played a significant role in their sport and paved the way for later generations of women by demonstrating what could be achieved. Their lack of visibility in the historical record reflects not only their relegation to the side-lines by male dominated sporting bodies but also the way in which sports historians have often focused on the driving forces behind the development of the major team sports. This public talk, delivered in March 2018 at MMU Cheshire, introduces three women from athletics (Violet Cambridge), rowing (Amy Gentry) and netball (Doris Wilkie) who were influential in these sports during the first half of the twentieth century but who have been hidden from view since then.
